CALLER
ID
Caller ID lets you see the telephone number of the person who is calling
before you answer the phone. The caller's telephone number shows on
a display unit that attaches to or is built into your telephone.
Note: Caller ID requires an additional piece of equipment that you
must provide - either a small display unit or display telephone. This
unit or telephone may be purchased from the retailer of your choice.
How does
it work?
Follow the instructions provided by
the manufacturer for setting up your display unit or telephone. The
instructions will also let you know how many numbers the display unit
can store and how to review and remove numbers from the list.
The telephone number of the person calling
you within your calling area will appear on your display unit between
the first and second rings.
For some calls, Caller ID display units
will show an "out of area" message instead of a telephone
number. Examples are calls from outside specially equipped areas and
calls made through an operator.
When the person calling you blocks the
display of his/her telephone number, your Caller ID display unit will
show an indicator, such as the letter "P" or the word "Private"
or "Anonymous" instead of a telephone number. Check the
instructions that came with your unit to see what the message will
say.
Any other
important points?
Certain telephone numbers cannot be
called back because they are not designed to accept incoming calls.
Also, you may see the main telephone number of a business rather than
information about the specific person calling you.
If you have Call Waiting, you will continue
to receive the special tone indicating that a call is waiting, but
the phone number of the Call Waiting call will not be displayed. You
can use your Call Waiting as you normally would.
Caller ID can be used with most answering
machines and with Voice Mail, so that you never miss a call even if
a message is not left. Remember to set your answering machine to pick
up after the second ring.
